“Turning plastic wastelands into fields of gold”
Words by Giada Fiorneris
Encouraged by the recent legal framework set by the European motion ‘Strategy for Plastic in a Circular Economy’, we bring to Ibiza an alchemic project to transform rubbish into gold. PlúsTic is an innovative concept to give new life to plastic residues that are infesting our oceans and lands.
Developed by interior designer Gianpaolo Passaretti, communication expert Giada Forneris, and many makers and artists that collaborate with us, the project is set within the ReThink Design Studio and its laboratory of circular creative design and social activation.
Our mission is to inspire and raise awareness about the role of plastic in our society, creating value from waste materials. We live in a planet covered with plastic, and in order to survive, we will soon need to turn the tap of single-use plastic off and learn how to best employ what is already all around us, avoiding downcycling it or treating it as worthless waste. For this reason, we also plan to run educational workshops and communication campaigns, to foster a whole plastic re-thinking approach and set Ibiza as a referent in the international fight against plastic pollution. We want to turn the enormous problem of plastic pollution into opportunities for the island, for the society and for those brands that want to take part in this modern revolution.
From Plastic to Plús-tic! From polluting, we now need to swiftly move into a new paradigm that wants products and materials across the entire life cycle to add value to the planet, instead of damaging it. The first enemy to defy is, clearly, single-use plastic (S.U.P.). To achieve this, we need to create a revolution on how we think, moving away from contaminating behaviours and embracing a new culture, which focuses in value generation and respect.
We are a team of communication specialists, designers, makers and artists who live in Ibiza. We work towards integrated creative solutions for clients around the world for design. With years of experience, we are now bringing all our passion and expertise into this vision, as we believe that creativity can change the world, and that:
“Having planet Earth and not ruining it,
is the most beautiful art that anybody could ever want”
– Andy Warhol.
After years of work and investigation and thanks to the support of local NGOs such as Ibiza Limpia, Plastic Free Ibiza and Formentera, as well as sponsors including Six Senses Hotel Ibiza, we managed to put together the right technology and expertise to start limited productions of unique objects, furniture, interior design solutions and artworks, which generate awareness to experience the entire plastic chain.
It was only a few years ago that we decided to enrich our lives and employ our skills in the stimulating field of sustainability. Design, art and communication get into the heart of people, and that’s where we want to be. On Ibiza, we had the chance to meet the most amazing minds, and together we are working in favour of the island. We believe that we offer a great opportunity for all the players involved to become allies in designing a meaningful world. We are here to support them doing so.
